Caleb Prince was serving his fourth two-year term in the New Hampshire state legislature. Like many politicians, he was elected on conservative campaigning although his voting record was quite liberal.
His bid for office had been successful with the aid of the National Abortion Rights Coalition, the American Education Association, and various unions. Their money poured into his campaign coffers, enabling Prince to fend off each and every conservative challenge.
Representative Prince had already attained the rank of assistant minority leader and was considered by the press to be one of the rising stars of the left-although he was publicly portrayed as a moderate-a man whose name came up often during discussions of future gubernatorial races. His position on the influential Ways and Means Committee also worked to his advantage.
